Oro crime incidence drops by 14.21% in 2008

Crime incidence in Cagayan de Oro City has dramatically dropped by 14.21 percent last year as the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO) reported a total 791 crime incidents, showing a decrease of 131 cases over previous year’s 922 crime incidents.

Of the total crime volume, 403 cases or 50.95 percent are classified as index crimes while 388 cases or 49.05 are considered as non-index crimes, City Police Director P/Sr. Supt. Noel P. Armilla disclosed in his annual accomplishment report submitted recently to Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula.

Classified as index crimes are murder, homicide, physical injury, robbery, theft and rape while crimes against persons, property, morals and order, chastity and other crimes are considered as non-index crimes.

In 2008, the average monthly crime rate in Cagayan de Oro City was 10.57 crime incidents per 100,000 population, declining by 27.70 percent as compared to the same period in 2007 which posted 14.62 monthly crime incidents.

The 743-strong COCPO also solved 57 out of 62 street crimes, reflecting a crime solution efficiency rate of 91.94 percent. It also successfully recovered 11 carnapped motor vehicles, 60 motorcycles and bicycles and apprehended 70 suspected carnappers.

On illegal drugs campaign, the local police held a total of 209 operations resulting to the arrest of 141 suspects, 23 of whom were identified to be drug pushers while 118 were drug users.

It also apprehended 225 persons due to illegal gambling and confiscated assorted gambling paraphernalia like ‘swertres’ tally sheets and stubs, units of video karera, ‘tolilong’ and bet money.

As the enforcer of the City Mayor’s closure orders, it served a total of 23 stoppage/closure orders against establishments and amusement places which violated provisions of the city’s codified ordinance, aside from providing security to 90 demolitions implemented by the City Demolition Committee.

With a financial aid from the City Government amounting to P11.3 million to support its logistical and administrative operations, the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office intensified its community relations program by launching the Police Assignment Assistance System to 18 major barangays and ‘Adopt-A-School Program’ to boost security measures in universities, colleges and schools.
