Villanueva is MisOr top performer in equivalency test

Villanueva, Misamis Oriental – The schools district of Villanueva posted a 61% performance rating in the recent National Accreditation and Equivalency Tests (NAET), making it as this year’s top-performer in the division of Misamis Oriental.

Villanueva Education Supervisor Aida Cayabas said that 48 out-of-school youth (OSY) who participated in the DepED Alternative Learning System (ALS) Program have been fully re-integrated in the formal secondary education level. “This is a modest yet concrete outcome in terms of reducing the number of out of school youth in the area” Cayabas said.

LGU reports indicate that Villanueva has an estimated 500 out of school youth. Through the ALS program, the OSYs attend structured learning sessions that enable them to catch-up with the academic requirements of the formal secondary education.

“Passing the NAET restores their rights and privileges as high school graduates thereby opening wider opportunities for a better life” Cayabas explained.

The ALS is one of the flagship programs of the local school board and has gotten wide support of the private sector such as STEAG State Power Inc.

STEAG has earmarked PhP200,000 for the program including provision of 900 workbooks for use during the learning activities. About 150 out-of-school youth in at least six barangays are currently enrolled in the program.

The support is in keeping with the company’s commitment to improve quality of lives of the people in its host communities. For the current year, STEAG has implemented about P1.2 million worth of projects supporting initiatives geared towards improving quality of education in the area.

WORKBOOKS FOR THE OUT OF SCHOOL YOUTH: About 900 workbooks were turned-over to the local school board of Villanueva Misamis Oriental for the implementation of the Alternative Learning System (ALS) Program. Designed to integrate high school dropouts in the formal education system, the program has produced 48 passers, making Villanueva as Misamis Oriental’s top performer in the 2009 National Accreditation and Equivalency Test.
