Flashfloods yesterday evening hit the city and left hundreds of families homeless plus ten persons were also missing. The floods started as early as 4:00 in the afternoon and few hours later started washing out houses in Barangays Cugman, Gusa, and Carmen.
The city disaster coordinating council could not yet ascertain how much were damaged by the floods as immediate evacuations and temporary shelters were the immediate concerns of the authorities.
Mayor Vicente Emano over a local radio station last night had immediately instructed members of the city social welfare and development to give help to the victims in the form of rice, noodles, canned goods, clothing, biddings and others which can help ease the pain felt by the families that were rendered homeless by the floods.
Emano said the city council would also ascertain sum of money from the calamity funds of the city to help the victims. Emano was accompanied by Misamis Oriental board member Peter Unabia during his rounds last night to the barangays badly hit by the floods.
Father Elmer Abacahin, spokesperson of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro also visited the victims that were temporarily sheltered in gymnasiums and urged parishes to extend help to the victims.
Local radio station Bombo Radyo also launched last “Oplan Pagmahal” to collect donations from city residents that were badly affected especially those that were rendered homeless.
“I am appealing to the city residents and the parishes to help the victims and also respond to the urgent call of Bombo Radyo to help the victims,” Father Abacahin said. He said the people can give their donations either at the parishes or at Bombo radio,” the priest said.
