CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY NEWS -- United States Ambassador Harry K. Thomas graced the launch of US Agency for International Development (USAID) Cities Development Initiative (CDI) on June 29, Friday in Cagayan de Oro City.

USAID Mission Director for the Philippines Gloria D. Steele and City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano forged a memorandum of understanding, witnessed by the Department of Trade and Industry Undersecretary Zenaida Maglaya and Department of Interior and Local Government Undersecretary Austere Padadero.

In his remarks, Ambassador Thomas stressed on the US government's commitment to the Philippines.

“This occasion shows not only our commitment to you, but also the potential, that we believe that you have the transparency and honesty to undertake the program,” he said.

He also said that the Philippines is among four countries in the world which the US government, through the partnership for growth (PGF), brings 15 federal agencies to provide assistance that will advance the country’s economic development.

“We have recognized your tremendous efforts to rehabilitate and reconstruct your city from terrible devastation by tropical Sendong, last year. We know that CDI will prosper here, continuing the construction and development, as well as, in increasing the dynamism of the city,” he added.

He likewise commended the leadership of Emano and the people for maintaining the city’s long term economic growth.

Cagayan de Oro City is among the three CDI pilot areas in the country. The other two cities participating in the initiative are Batangas City and Iloilo City. This initiative according to USAID Mission Director Gloria D. Steele is piloting on something that none of any USAID offices around the world has done, that is, for cities to act as engines of economic growth. It is built on the premise that economic growth and job creation are closely linked to urban development.

Pacquiao Wins!

Written By: JOEL ESCOL
The world’s greatest fighter of all time, Manny “the Pacman” Pacquiao, has won against challenger Timothy “the Destroyer” Bradley in a much contested and controversial fight of the year. Well, I saw the fight, and I was also convinced he won against Bradley but my score was quite closed. It means the fight was for Pacquiao but only in a very little margin.

Bradley won in the first three rounds in my score card if I was to be the judge of the game. From rounds 4 and until 11th I will give it to Pacquiao, then the last round was for Bradley again. I am not favoring Pacquiao just because I am a Filipino but Bradley has failed to prove very convincingly that he was the real winner in the bout. I’d rather that the judges decided it a draw than favoring somebody who has not really proven his worth. Can you imagine a winner that kept backing off because he was afraid of the Pacman? In the last five rounds of the 12 round-brawl, the Destroyer Bradley had kept on retreating as if he wanted to stop the fight because he was exhausted.

I’m sure if it was to be a text vote inside the MGM Grand, majority of those present there, even the Americans, would vote for the Pacman. What a game! I am afraid and suspected there was a cheater behind it.

Solid punches
If you are going to review the video during the fight, Pacquiao has landed a lot of clear and solid combination of punches as against Bradley. All of Bradley’s punches only landed at the hands of Pacquiao who had carefully covered his face. In fact, Pacquiao admitted most of the punches of the Destroyer landed at his hands which covered his face. If there were times Pacquiao was hit by Bradley’s counter-punches, it’s not very clear and solid ones.

"I didn't listen to the announcement because I thought I had won [verdicts from] all the judges," Filipino southpaw Pacquiao told reporters after ending an unbeaten run of 15 bouts.

"I respect the decision but 100 percent I believe I won the fight. I don't even remember if he hurt me one punch. He got me with a couple of jabs but I don't remember if he hit me a solid punch in my face.

"I give Bradley credit, maybe three rounds for him because in some rounds I relax. Aside from three rounds, every round I hurt him."

Planned game
I heard rumors that the game was already meant that way…that Pacman will be defeated because there is already planned rematch on November 6, and the fight was allegedly for the money only. I hope those were only rumors and were not true as others believed the fight to be. Lutong macao, ika nga. Honestly, I was really disgruntled of the result. However, the decisionof the judges are final and we have nothing to do but to respect it. This also happened in the second rematch between Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. That game, however, I was also convinced Marquez won. So, this fight now is the same with that previous fight between Manny and Marquez. I’m sure a lot of Filipinos and the Pacquiao fans all over the world would feel the game was stolen from Pacquiao. At least for now, Marquez has all the laughter and contentment. Pacman has felt now what Marques has also felt before.

Texts: Joel Escol

The much awaited face-off between two of the world most celebrated boxers of the decade will finally have their final boxing match today, June 9, 2012 (June 10 in the Philippines). Now, the question lies who among the two fighters will be knocked out, as both have claimed to knock each other out in the canvass come fighting moment? For the fans all over the world, you can see the Pacquiao Bradley live stream online, so start browsing now while the fight has not started yet.

The Philippines and the world’s greatest Fighter Manny Pacquiao is highly favored in this brawl but Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley is not stunned by the observations of boxing experts and analysts in all corners of the world. He said his training is “hell,” and this makes him the best performer in this fight, while the Pacman also claimed contrary to Bradley, saying that his boxing training is also “heaven.” The Pacquiao vs Bradley live stream is what you should be looking now over the net.

Well, much has been said about the two greatest boxers of the world and we will see later the better man in the ring. Will it be the Pacman or the Desert Storm?

In my own opinion for this, the fight is not over yet and everyone has chances of grabbing the world’s welterweight belt. While it’s true that Pacquiao has all the advantage but remember also that Bradley is undefeated and at the peak of his career. This means he would do everything and fight to the death if only to prove to the Pacquiao fans and the boxing experts that they were wrong in the earlier judgment over the outcome of the fight. So, if you have not found the site online, you should start searching for the Pacquiao Bradley live stream online now!

A Sad Story for Typhoon Washi That Hit Cagayan de Oro

Fe Chisley left her family in the Philippines 12 years ago to move to the United States, but from how much she talked and laughed with her sisters each day, you would have thought they lived next door.
She knew all the details of their lives, including the meal her younger sister Naomi, “the chef of the family,” had planned for their mother’s 88th birthday. They talked Thursday night as Naomi and another sister, Sarah, prepared spring rolls for the party the next day.

But the following evening, when Chisley called to wish her mother a happy birthday, no one picked up the phone. Calls to her sisters’ cellphones, which they always kept close by, also went unanswered.
After frantic calls to other family members, Chisley, 48, heard the news she still cannot believe: Naomi, 46, and Sarah, 50, had drowned early Saturday morning after a flash flood inundated their mother’s home in the southern Philippine town of Balulang, near the city of Cagayan de Oro. More than 900 others also died.
The sisters died while saving their mother on her birthday.

“Today, they were laughing; the next day, they were gone,” said Chisley’s husband, Vernon. Chisley sat on the couch beside him in their Temple Hills home, her eyes puffy from crying, her small hands clutching his large fingers.
“They are just super, super sweet,” she said, clicking over a computer screen filled with snapshots of her smiling sisters. Sobbing, she added, “I keep calling their names.”
Across the Washington region, home to about 200,000 Filipinos, churches and community groups have begun collecting money to help the tens of thousands who were displaced by the flooding and are in need of drinking water, blankets, clothes and food.

Local Filipinos have donated about $5,000 via community organizations, said Bing Branigin, media director for the National Federation of Filipino American Associations. Feed the Hungry, a D.C.-based Filipino organization, has sent $10,000, she said.

“Filipinos are very extended families, so a lot of them are coming from that province, and they are aggressively pushing for fundraising,” Branigin said. Local Catholic churches, where many of the families worship, are collecting money at the midnight Masses scheduled around Christmas, she said.
Across the United States, Filipino Americans “are breaking into their piggy banks right now,” said Napoleon Curameng, regional director of the ANCOP Foundation USA. Those donations, many in the amounts of $20, $50 or $100, have totaled more than $6,000.

Chisley’s family members, who live near mountains, were used to minor floods during storms. When a typhoon started Friday night, they were not worried. When a third sister, who had left the house to visit another relative, sent a text message to check on them, they said they were watching TV and were fine.
An hour later, the street outside their house had become a river, and the water had risen to their mattresses. Sarah and Naomi upended a bed and hoisted their mother on top. They stood on either side to keep the bed from tipping over and told their mother not to be scared because they were there.
But the water kept rising. “The last words Naomi said were, ‘Sarah, I cannot breathe anymore,’” Chisley said, recounting her mother’s account of the ordeal. Shortly after, Sarah, too, fell silent. When the water receded a few hours later, their mother found their bodies, covered in mud, on the floor.

For Chisley, who had not visited her family in seven years, the tragedy comes after health problems, including ovarian and uterine cancer, had kept her from traveling. She helped provide for her family and was planning a visit next year. She had already filled a bag with gifts for her sisters. Instead, thanks to a ticket donated by a friend, a retired airline employee, she will leave Wednesday on a 21-hour journey to help bury them.
She is grateful for the gift but wishes she were already there to comfort her mother.
“If only I had wings like a dove,” she said, “I would fly right away.” - credit for the Washington Post
