Benaldo May Suffer Defeat Against Uy, Comelec Tally Shows

Cagayan de Oro City’s incumbent Congressman Benjamin “Benjo” Benaldo may suffer defeat if the trending of the recent canvassing made by the Commission on Elections continues.

As of last night (May 13) the Comelec tally showed Benaldo getting only 16,832 votes as against challenger, former 1st district congressman, Rolando “Klarex” Uy who also got 29,584 votes.

“It seems the former congressman is likely to get back the post again if this canvassing continues in favor of him,” says an observer after getting the initial results of the canvassing made by the Comelec.

For the city’s 2nd Congressional district, challenger and former city councilor Ian Mark Nacaya suffered a beating from incumbent congressman Rufus Rodriguez. The Comelec’s partial tally shows Nacaya grabbing only a total of 13,269 votes as against Rodriguez’s 59,488.

For the mayoralty race, incumbent mayor Vicente Emano may also likely to suffer the same fate as Congressman Benaldo. Moreno was ahead of over 12,000 votes with his 72,428, while the incumbent mayor had only 59,739 votes.

The veteran politician Emano suffered his first defeat with challenger Ruthie Guingona in gubernatorial race in Misamis Oriental province. But Guingona only served her term for more months, as she only won by protest, which usually results when another election is near.

During the last mayoralty race, his political opponent Rolando Uy had accused him of cheating. Uy believed he won. Emano only win by over 2,000 votes, but Emano’s winning was marred with lots of questions as thousands of ballots were allegedly dumped at the city’s landfill, prompting suspicion of election cheating.
For the vice mayoralty race, incumbent vice mayor Ian Acenas is also beating challenger Ed Cabanlas. Acenas initially had 62,184 votes, while Cabanlas has only 53,809 votes.

The partial results of canvassing as of last night (May 13) for city council seats are as follows:
1)       Candy Darimbang – 31,308
2)       Zaldy Ocon – 26,249
3)       Annie Daba – 25,377
4)       Roger Abaday – 25,370
5)       Inday Dahino – 24,976
6)       Dante Pajo – 22,904
7)       Alden Bacal – 21,425
8)       Adrian Barba – 21,412
2nd District
1)       Ramon Tabor – 35,820
2)       Bong Lao – 34,308
3)       Nadya Emano – 33,367
4)       Leon Gan Jr. – 31,697
5)       Eric Salcedo – 30,857
6)       Alex Dacer – 30,305
7)       Jun Acenas – 29,585
8)       President Elipe – 27,844

Get a urinalysis to prevent kidney diseases, says NKTI

 By Apipa P. Bagumbaran

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- The National Kidney Transplant Institute (NKTI), through its Renal Disease Control Program (REDCOP), is urging the public to have a regular urine examination to prevent kidney diseases.

This call was sounded by Dr. Susan L. Jorge, assistant program manager of the REDCOP, during the lay forum on renal health and disease prevention held, June 20, here.

She said one discovers that one's kidney is damaged when almost 90 percent of the organ is already diseased.

Urinalysis is the simplest diagnostic procedure that can help your doctor decide whether there is a problem regarding the kidney, she emphasized; it is the best step in preventing renal diseases.

During the forum, Jorge also underscored the significant functions of the kidneys and the importance of taking care of them, stating that anyone at any age can have kidney diseases.

According to her, the kidney is one of the most vital parts of body because it does not only excrete waste products, it also maintains bone health, controls blood pressure, maintains an acid-base balance, and produces hormones that are needed by the body.

Participated in by more than 500 participants from various sectors, the lay forum was a collaborative undertaking of the NKTI-REDCOP, Department of Health, and the Philippine Information Agency to raise awareness about renal health and diseases.

It was one of the activities slated this month in observance of this year’s National Kidney Month with a theme, "Ikaw at AKo, Panalo sa Malusog na Bato.”

Basketball on Wheels goes to Cagayan de Oro City

CANITOAN, Cagayan de Oro City – The Oro Habitat Persons With Disabilities Homeowners Association (OHPWDHA) is spearheading “Basketball On Wheels” on May 1, 2010 at the Calaanan Relocation Site Covered Court, as a pre-fiesta presentation and contribution of the organization.

“Basketball on Wheels” is a basketball game for persons on wheelchairs and this very exciting game for disabled persons is now gaining recognition worldwide.
The concept still follows the traditional rules in basketball only that the players are all handicapped persons on wheel chairs.
OHPWDHA president Raul Tolinero said basketball on wheels will surely entertain visitors and guests as the players they have invited are all professional players.
“We have invited two professional teams and cash prizes await the champion of the tourney,” the president of the first ever association for disabled homeowners said.
Tolinero said this is already the second time that the association has sponsored the same event to entertain the people living in Calaanan Relocation site and its neighboring places.
“We brought the game in the relocation site since these people inside the relocation, who are mostly indigents and low income earners cannot actually watch “basketball on wheels” because they are special games only and often sponsored during fiestas.”
Adison Nadela, event chairperson added that this event is proudly sponsored by Globe, Dunkin Donut, Modtrade, City Government of Cagayan de Oro, Waterlite, and Fighter Wine.
“I will also give my special thanks for the support given to us by ABS-CBN, Canitoan Barangay Council, CEADORF and all the people who supported us to make this event a reality on scheduled date,” Nadela stressed.
He said on May 1 prior to the tournament, a motorcade will take place at Canitoan poblacion participated in by the Barangay Council, various local organizations and the candidates for Miss Calaanan 2010 beauty tilt.

Rufus says ‘power’ special session is definite

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - It’s definite… the President  is already calling a special session of Congress to tackle the worsening power situation in the country, according to Representative Rufus B. Rodriguez, 2nd District of Cagayan de Oro.

In a press statement here this afternoon, Rodriguez said the special session, which  is slated on Wednesday, March 10, seeks to authorize the government to find new sources of power in combating the energy crisis that has hit the country, particularly Mindanao for the past four months.

“I had to first propose that Section 71 of the Electricity Power and Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) be invoked over the energy crisis, while the other congressmen and senators were not interested because they are not from Mindanao,” he said.

He assured, it is never giving any emergency power to  President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, but mere power relating the energy crisis. It is neither power under martial law, he further said.
Section 71 of the EPIRA law states that “upon the determination by the President of the Philippines of an imminent shortage of the supply of electricity, Congress may authorize, through a joint resolution, the establishment of additional generating capacity under such terms and conditions as it may approve.”

As this developed, Rodriguez has called on all Mindanaonons to prod their respective congressional representatives to attend the special session on March 10, this year.

“I am from Mindanao. We are already suffering from five hour- brownouts every day, especially in Cagayan de Oro. Therefore, we should be the one to demand that there should be action. Otherwise, we will lose so much in our households and businesses,” Rodriguez stated.
Rodriguez expects necessary funds are immediately appropriated to enable the government to rent or lease and deploy Luzon-based power barges to Mindanao, operate diesel plants, such as the Iligan Power Plant, and other privately-owned power generators to solve the power crisis in Mindanao soonest possible.

Furthermore, he called on the Mindanaonons to be vigilant so that the funds should be used only for the rightful purposes, not for any political intentions.
On the apprehension that the President abuses her power in the process, Rodriguez pointed out that “Congress will set the terms and conditions, under which no transaction should be made without proper bidding, all the consumer groups must be represent to monitor all the procedures to avoid corruption,” he assured.

February 9 is Abante Mindanao’s big day

By Joe del Puerto Felicilda
ABAMIN or Abante Mindanao, the only Cagayan de Oro-born partylist, is holding its grand launching on the 9th of this month here in the city.
ABAMIN President Maximo “Maxi” B. Rodriguez Jr. told BusinessWeek Mindanao that  the day-long event will be highlighted by a Holy Mass at the Saint Augustine Cathedral and a multi-group motorcade around the city.

“We expect thousands of our members and supporters to join us in this most significant event in life of ABAMIN, the one and only partylist group conceptualized and born right here in Cagayan de Oro City,” said Rodriguez.

ABAMIN is a movement founded by Representative Rufus B. Rodriguez of the 2nd District of Cagayan de Oro, whose advocacy centers on true peace, solidarity and justice, as well as on the economic, social and political developments in Mindanao.

Rodriguez further said ABAMIN aims to represent in the Lower House of Congress the marginalized urban poor, the unrepresented indigenous peoples, the oppressed and those who are directly affected by the ongoing conflicts in this part of the country.

The younger Rodriguez, who leads the ABAMIN nominees, revealed that similar activities are simultaneously taking place on the same day in such key cities as Davao, Gingoog, Ozamis, Malaybalay, Butuan and Surigao, among others.

Keep away from partisan politics, army chief warns troops

CAGAYAN de Oro City – Lt. Gen. Delfin N. Bangit, Philippine Army Chief, has called on the men and women of the 4th Infantry Division (4ID), PA to keep away from partisan activities but to work very hard for a credible elections.

“Ako’y nakikiusap sa lahat na sundalo na huwag makialam sa politika. (I ask all the soldiers not to take part in partisan politics). The only political exercise that we will do is to vote. And so let us leave politics to the politicians,” he told them, during the 40th anniversary of 4ID in Camp Evangelista, over the weekend.
He also urged them to work closely with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the local government units (LGU) to address the armed threats in their areas, if any, because the mandate of the soldiers is to protect the voters.

The PA Chief then directed his field commanders to make a physical accounting of their personnel. “Know where they are and what they are doing. Per Sec. 261 of the Omnibus Election Code, they should not intervene in any political activity, except to vote,” he told them.
However, the soldiers may be assigned as security details for some candidates in the upcoming elections, as long as they comply with the guidelines of the Commission on Elections, particularly on the wearing of uniforms when carrying firearms.

Over luncheon, he said the Philippine Army is offering an automatic promotion for enlisted personnel (EP) who would want to earn college degrees in human resource (HR) and logistics at the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) Academy.
“This is one way of erasing the so-called “utak pulbora (gunpowder mentality)” of some of the soldiers,” the PA Chief said and explained that the Academy would be like that of the PNP University inside Camp Crame that aims to help policemen finish a degree in college.

Again, he said, the Army is offering scholarships, preferably, for those who wanted to become lawyers and medical officers, but did not have the needed financial resources to do it, on condition that they will stay in the country after graduation. (Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob)
