PGMA inspects Oro’s Kauswagan-Puntod bridge project

Cagayan de Oro City – President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo recently inspected the completed Kauswagan-Puntod Bridge in Cagayan de Oro City and check the progress of the on-going construction of the approach and access road.

The President arrived with City Mayor Constantino Jaraula, Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar Moreno, Cagayan de Oro 1st District Congressman Rolando Uy, 2nd District Congressman Rufus Rodriguez, Misamis Oriental 2nd District Congressman Yevgeny Emano along with heads of government departments and agencies.

She was met by Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 10 Director Jerome dela Rosa, who gave a briefing on the profile and progress of the project.

Dela Rosa reported that the P247-million, 352-linear meter Bridge has been open to traffic since 2006 and P400-million has been released for the construction of the barangay Puntod Rotunda, barangay Kauswagan intersection, partial construction of barangay Iponan Bridge III and access road opening from barangay Bayabas-West Bound Terminal-Iponan Bridge junction.

The President said during the briefing that she wants to accelerate all projects this year, so all the deadlines are moved forward.

The bridge is one of the President’s priority projects and once completed, it is expected to spur economic development in the City, including the province of Misamis Oriental because it provides a shorter route for truck loads of products coming from Iligan City, Lanao del Norte province and Butuan City to the City port.

Mayor Jaraula, for his part, announced to the President that the bridge has also helped ease the traffic in the City and is a solid proof of the national government’s determination to realize the development of the Cagayan-Iligan Corridor.

Dela Rosa also said that President Arroyo wants the project finished before her term ends in 2010. (Brent M. Bravo)
