The City Government of Cagayan de Oro will increase the number of scholars under the City College Scholarship Program (CCSP) from the present 208 to 300, covering school year 2009-2010.
This was assured by City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula after the CCSP Committee headed by city accountant Wilma Polley-Rugay presented the 67 graduating scholars during Monday’s flag raising ceremony at City Hall.
As he congratulated the batch of graduating city-sponsored scholars, Mayor Jaraula cited the need to expand the coverage of the City College Scholarship Program in an effort to help more poor but deserving students avail of the program.
Elated by the report that the 67 graduating scholars is the biggest batch so far as compared to the previous batches, Mayor Jaraula said the city government will tender on March 13 a special dinner for the graduating city scholars in recognition for their hard work, perseverance and determination to pursue their free college education.
Members of the City Council, to be led by Vice Mayor Vicente Y. Emano who conceived the scholarship program in 1998 when he was the city mayor, department heads and chiefs of office at City Hall will join with the scholars during the dinner, the Mayor added.
To date, the City College Scholarship Program has already produced a total of 264 graduates from the different colleges and universities in Cagayan de Oro since its implementation more than 10 years ago.
With a free matriculation and stipend, the scholarship program basically aims to give golden opportunity to those underprivileged but deserving, qualified high school graduates in the city to earn a degree in college.
The Community Improvement Division of the City Mayor’s Office, headed by Norma Lee Sabacajan, serves as the program secretariat.
