Oro councilor tagged in car accident killing teener

A city councilor of Cagayan de Oro City is now the subject of police investigation after he figured in a car accident and reportedly killed a teenager yesterday dawn in Barangay Carmen.

Police authorities investigating the case identified the suspect as City Councilor Alden Bacal, also a former news anchor of ABS-CBN Cagayan de Oro before he joined politics and elected city councilor. While the victim who died on the spot was also identified as Junrey Balingit, a 14 year old resident of Sitio Dampil, Upper Dagong, Carmen. Balingit was riding in his bicycle when Bacal allegedly bumped him.

Balingit's head was cracked due to the impact of the vehicle that hit him and witnesses said he died immediately after the accident. Although Balingit was rushed to the nearby hospital but attending doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.

In an interview with a local with the media Bacal denied having hit the boy but later accepted his fault and ask forgiveness to the bereaved family of the victim. He said it is his personal problem and he is willing to face the consequences that maybe meted him by the authorities.

"I am asking forgiveness for this accident. I am willing to face whatever sanctions by the authorities because of my actions," the city councilor told reporters in vernacular.

He said he would also help the victim in whatever available resources he has to ease their times of sorrow of the great loss of their fourteen year old son who is studying as a second year high school student in the city high school.

Police probers are yet to confirm reports the city councilor was allegedly under the influence of liquor when the accident took place.
