Cagayan de Oro broadcaster survives slay try

A local radio broadcaster of DXCC-RMN Cagayan de Oro has survived an almost fatal attack of motorcycle-riding suspects who peppered him with a single bullet while on his way home yesterday evening.

Police identified the hard-hitting broadcaster as Nilo Labares who gained a radio monicker of “Babayeng Bagul” because of his special radio segment of light commentaries on issues and entertainment using the voice of a gay identified in the radio as Babayeng Bagul. Aside from this, Labares also anchored a regular news affair program “RMN Balita” from 4:00-5:00 in the afternoon.

The broadcaster was hit at the back of his body when the gunman who back ride on a single motorcycle along Tomasaco Street shot him at close range while on his way home after his radio program.

A concerned motorela driver brought the victim to the nearest Maria Reyna Hospital bathed in blood while still conscious, report said.

Over RMN radio, his co-broadcaster Rey Maraunay revealed that weeks before the slay try Labares has already confided to his companions he received threats from still unknown persons, reportedly from people operating the illegal video machines in the city.

At around past 8:00 yesterday, media practitioners, government officials visited him at the hospital. There were also the presence of Vice Mayor Vicente Emano and newly installed City Director PSSupt Noel Armilla.

The police chief immediately created “Taskforce Labares” to conduct thorough investigation of the almost fatal shooting of the said broadcaster.

Cagayan de Oro Press Club (COPC) president Vincent Jaudian who also visited Labares at the hospital immediately condemned the shooting. He said the COPC will conduct separate investigation to help the police identify the suspects.

Initial police investigation disclosed that since last year Labares has been hitting the operators of illegal video machines in the city until she receive threats of his life this year.

As a chief of reporters of the radio station who regularly attacks illegal video karera operators, Labares was instrumental in the raids of various illegal video machines and even linked some policemen that are allegedly in cahoots with the illegal video machine operators.

The police said this is possibly the motive of the shooting of the broadcaster yesterday while on his way home.
