Retinol Products: Best Hope for Controlling Thee Aging Process

Majority of beauty conscious consumers would probably know that retinol is one of the main ingredients incorporated in most anti aging and skin care products sold in the market today.
Dermatologists say retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, is one of the most effective and powerful anti aging ingredients used in most skin care products today.

Retinol has been proven to smoothes and eliminates wrinkles, unclog pores, lighten brown spots and improve the overall texture of the skin. It corrects existing damage on the skin while preventing the early signs of aging, promoting fewer skin breakouts and tightening the pores of the skin.

Retinol has already been used in skin care products since the 1970s. It is incorporated in different anti aging and skin care products in various strengths and forms. The choice therefore lies on the consumers, depending on the type of skin they have.

But dermatologists say that not all retinol products are the same so users must be able to find the correct formula that is best for them.
Retinol products are believed to act directly on the skin cells’ DNA and boost the cells’ functions. It increases cell turnover, allowing the skin to continually slough off damaged cells and make new ones.
This wonder ingredient also acts to thicken the epidermis, the skin’s second layer, and thin the surface, resulting to a firm and luminous skin.
But perhaps the main function of retinol products that is really important is its role in the production of collagen, a protein that maintains the skin’s elasticity and firmness.
As people age, the amount of collagen in the body decreases, resulting to the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and age spots.

Aside from boosting the production of collagen, retinol also prevents the breakdown of produced collagen, allowing it to go deeper into the skin.
Dermatologists say retinol also aid in the formation of glycosaminoglycans, substances that help keep the body’s tissues hydrated.
Glycosaminoglycans therefore help make the skin moisturized.
Retinol products are also effective in decreasing oil production in the skin and in clearing dead skin cells.

Dermatologist Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas says there is not a single class of ingredient that can rival the track record that retinol products have, which is backed by proven scientific results.
Though retinol products is very effective in reversing the visible signs of aging, dermatologists warn it can cause irritation and redness on the skin especially if users will expose themselves to the sun.
If sun exposure cannot be avoided, users are advised to apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher before going out in the morning to protect the skin from photosensitivity and sun damage.
But to be safe, dermatologists recommend applying retinol products in the evening to avoid possible irritation from the sun.

Owing to the sensitivity of vitamin A to light, heat and oxygen, dermatologists recommend buying retinol products that arelabeled as “stabilized” or “encapsulated” and those that are packaged in airtight plastic or aluminum tubes to make sure these are still fresh and effective.
