Cagayan de Oro mayor promotes natural family planning, responsible parenting


CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula recently signed Executive Order No. 2009CGJ 053 creating the eight-man City Responsible Parenting / Natural Family Planning (RP/NFP) Team of Cagayan de Oro.
The simple signing activity was held during Monday’s flag raising ceremony at the City Hall as witnessed by Archbishop Antonio J. Ledesma, Vice Mayor Vicente Y. Emano, members of the City Council, department heads and employees.
The City Responsible Parenting / Natural Family Planning (RP/NFP) Team is chaired by City Health Officer Dr. Jerie P. Calingasan with City Administrator Griscelda M. Joson as vice chairman and the Community Improvement Division of the City Mayor’s Office serving as Secretariat.
The members are: Rev. Florencio Salvador and natural family planning coordinator Ana Leah Pielago of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro, Dr. Edna B. Eugenio of the City Health Office, Acting City Social Welfare and Development Officer Marisa M. Tagarda, Community Improvement Division Chief Norma L. Sabacajan and Jeremias Cabasan of the Commission of Population (POPCOM)-10.
The creation of the team is part of the government’s aggressive and systematic strategy to promote responsible parenting and natural family planning in the grass root level.
It is also tasked to make couples aware of their basic responsibilities as parents; awaken their sense of commitment towards their family, neighbors, community, society and nation as a whole; and consider responsible parenting as a way of life towards the attainment of sustainable human development.
With a P500,000 initial funding from the City Government for its operations, the team is expected to formulate plans, systems, policies and guidelines for the effective implementation of RP/NFP program.
It will also organize and train barangay-based groups; hold classes and sessions; act as lead advocates and mobilize partner agencies; maintain data bank for data storage and retrieval; procure and distribute commodities; among others.
